Sewing with Silk: Auditioning Silk Fabrics

Video: Threads magazine

Katrina Walker, instructor in the Sewing with Silk video series, shares her approach to selecting the right silk textile for any garment project. Testing the qualities of materials is a process she calls “auditioning silk fabrics.”

She has a number of ways to evaluate the characteristics and performance of different fabrics. First, she likes to drape yardage over a dress form or over the body to determine the quality of drape. Next, she uses the “scrunch” test: This tells her how prone the fabric is to wrinkling. Crepes often release wrinkles easily. Stiffer textiles, such as taffeta form crisp, angular creases. Generally, spun silks wrinkle more than filament silks.
